The Selman Living Laboratory is located approximately 9 miles south and west of Freedom. This outdoor “lab” offers students, wildlife enthusiasts, researchers and conservationists tremendous opportunities to experience the wilds of the Southern Great Plains. Established in 1998 as a collaborative project between Mrs. Betty Selman, the University of Central Oklahoma, and funding assistance from the Oklahoma Department of Tourism, the SLL is home to the largest series of bat caves in Oklahoma.
Living quarters are available on-site to assist researchers and students whose interests involve projects associated with the SLL. The summer-time bat watches are hugely popular events that draw folks from across the United States. NWOSU also hosts “star parties” at the SLL on clear summer and fall evenings.
